'Hi my name is Dakota Swiger and I was born with Congenital Scoliosis  which is different than other types of scoliosis. Congenital Scoliosis is a birth defect of the spine.

I had my first surgery at 10 months old.  That scar is on my left side and is about 9 inches in length.  The Dr.’s removed a rib to fuse my spine to slow the progression of my spine curve.

When I was 4 I had my 2nd surgery. The Dr.’s decided it was time to put growing rods in my spine to help keep it as straight as possible and to also help my spine to continue to grow. The rods take up pretty much the entire length of my spine. With the growing rods in place this now meant that I would need 1 to 2 surgeries a year for the next 6 to 8  years.

Today I am 10 years old and on May 15, 2013 I had my 12th back surgery. As  you can imagine the scar on my back is very large and thick.  I also  have a piece of rod that is very noticeable under the skin that the Dr.’s have not been able to correct.

I love to do pageants and now that I am older I tend to shy away from  dresses that show my back.

I know my scars are a big part of who I am.

I Shine With my Scars and I Shine Because of my Scars.
